Project Overview:
The City of Lafayette is installing a new pedestrian-activated High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal on Baseline Road, east of Gold Hill Drive, to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility. The HAWK signal will provide a safer crossing for people walking and biking by stopping traffic only when the crossing is activated.
The HAWK signals remain dark until activated by a pedestrian or bicyclist using the push button. Once activated, the signal alerts drivers to slow down before displaying a red light, allowing pedestrians and bicyclists to cross safely using a walk signal and countdown timer.
The project includes:
Installing a new pedestrian-activated HAWK signal
Constructing a safer crossing for pedestrians and bicyclists across Baseline Road
Providing educational resources to help the community understand how to use the HAWK signal
Sharing project updates and construction information throughout the duration of the project
Restoring the work area once construction is complete
See the guide below for step-by-step instructions on how pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers should use the new HAWK signal safely.
