WHY A SUSTAINABILITY PLAN?
The City developed its first Sustainability Plan. The Sustainability Plan serves as a guide for City of Lafayette leadership, residents and businesses on sustainability practices, to improve the quality of life, promote good stewardship of the environment, and promote sound long-term financial management.
The Sustainability Plan contains goals, strategies, specific actions, and measurable targets on energy efficiency and renewable energy, waste reduction, and green and healthy buildings. Common themes across these topics are outreach and education and equity and inclusion.
While sustainability encompasses a broad range of topics, the city has chosen to focus its efforts and investment on a select few rather than dilute its resources on many. Further, this plan is aligned with other city planning efforts, including the Comprehensive Plan, Parks, Recreation, Open Space (PROS) Master Plan, and the Preservation Master Plan without duplicating efforts and topic areas.

The Sustainability Plan has three key sections: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Waste Reduction and Diversion, and Green and Healthy Building. Within each of these sections the Plan includes various strategies to achieve the Plan's goals. Strategies are broad, high-level approaches to working toward sustainability. In turn, each Strategy may have various tactics that will be developed by City staff and other partners. For example, the first proposed Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy strategy is EN1: Expand energy efficiency services to disadvantaged residents. The strategy is to assist disadvantaged residents, and the tactics used to implement this strategy may include subsidized community solar, utility bill assistance, or weatherization services. Please see the Sustainability Plan at a Glance in the document library on the lower right of this page to learn more.
We aspire to implement all of the Plan's strategies, but we still must prioritize them. The following survey asks you to rate the priority level for each strategy. Your responses will help guide implementation of the Sustainability Plan.
